CWN group, proposal take 3
From the 19th century idealistic landscape paintings we have idolized the idea of having the perfect view of nature. This notion of the “view” is something that has not been erased by time, in fact, it has only been strengthened. We have not surpassed the day where people have stopped buying these pastoral landscape images to adorn their homes and this time will probably not come to pass in the near future. But while we still give great value to these images, they have started to be subside due to commodification of the real thing. Realtors and buyers alike focus on many aspects of selling and buying a home, respectively. From the amount of bedrooms to the size of the kitchen to the amount of natural light, another aspect highly sought after is an amazing view. And people will pay top notch prices for an incredible view, the best view.
For our term project, our group is interested in following this notion of the “view.” We are curious to find out the different price ranges of condominiums at the John Ross in respect to their views. In the same sentiment, we are also deeply intrigued by how people associate this view from their home with how they connect to their environment. We want to question why our culture puts so much emphasis on having a “view,” and what that means for the people at the John Ross.
To accomplish this project, our plan is to set up a camera in 5 different condominiums at the John Ross, each ranging in price range, floor plan and view. We would like to set up a camera that could take video from each of these apartments for 24 hours. The thought behind this is that you could experience an entire day of the view from each of the condos. Which, in fact, might be more than someone would actually experience of their own view from their condo. In the gallery space, we would like to include photos from each apartment, floor plans and the entire video. We would also like to create golden frames to put around the TV displays in the gallery, as a way of referencing the 19th century landscape paintings.
