Personally, I thought it added a nice bit of humor, and liked the layers of watching a video, of people outside watching nature, on a TV, that’s showing the nature they would see without the TV. I think you don’t even need the living room, just people on a blanket even, like a picnic. Anyway, I liked that whole direction. I think you can be more cutting when you make people laugh at themselves.

Take 2 response

One of the assumptions or commentaries being made is that people mostly experience nature through a frame. I’m a bit hesitant about this. I think that you have two ideas, one is about framing nature and the other is how people experience nature.

Yes, I can see that people often experience nature through a frame, like a window or a TV, so then maybe your project expands to frames besides the TV.

Or maybe you want to talk about the relationship between TV and nature, and that particular way of experiencing nature.

I’m sensing a critique about people experiencing nature with TV. One thing to think about is that TV takes people to places they often could never go -even if they wanted to- and that it exposes people to places that you don’t want people to go to -like sensitive habitats. People learn to care about places they’ve never been to. Maybe they care more than about places closer to home?? I don’t know. But I don’t think that its all bad. Not everyone can be outside to enjoy nature, and TV gives them a way to do it.

I must confess that I don’t quite “get” the photo next the video of the footage. I’m also concerned that the footage might be boring? Sometimes I’m dense about these things though. I feel like it could be stronger somehow, but I have no idea how (sorry).

Take 3 response

The value of the view… couple questions. Who is determining the price of the view? If you are looking at sold condos -the appraiser will assign it a $ value, but that is probably private information. You are probably suggesting unsold condos? Which is nice because then you are only looking at how the developer has assigned $value to the view. I think that you could also explore what the view means to people/symbolizes, and what constitutes a “better” view.

The 24 hour footage has a time element, especially on fast-forward as I expect? What are you trying to say with that?

I like the golden frame! Part of me wants to suggest using a digital effect to make a “painting” out of the view, that morphs into the photo and back again -showing the relationship to landscape paintings more literally for people who don’t have this background.

What if you put the golden frame around the TV screens, had the screens show the views morhping from photo to painting to photo, and put a price tag dangling from each one? Maybe the title for each “painting” is the name of the condo floorplan (“Southern View from Deschutes -$250,000”.

TWO IDEAS.

we have two proposals and would love feedback on them as soon as possible. any thoughts?

CWN group, proposal take 2

One can frame nature and life through windows, photographs, and televisions. While framing can be an effective way to abstractly understand a subject, we feel it is important to step away from this framing in order to truly connect with nature. We would like to address the issue of framing nature through television by installing a television in six locations outside. The television, while placed in each location, will be displaying a live feed of the natural scene it is obscuring, thus creating a “window” filtered through the television. The scene would then be photographed. The effect of the photograph would be much like the “Spring in New York” project posted by Liz earlier, but replacing the photo with a television.

Each photograph would be displayed side-by-side with a television playing the footage actually captured from the site when the picture was taken. The final installation will be in the John Ross artist studio, with six televisions and six photographs setup side by side.

Our hope is to communicate the idea of the frame, asking viewers how they personally experience nature (do they mostly just watch nature programs on the discovery channel?). By juxtaposing the photo of the first installation next to the footage from the first installation, we hope visitors will understand our commentary on framing nature.

MATERIALS LIST:

• 6 HD LCD SCREENS (TV’S) 25 “ screen

• 1 TV stand (http://www.lcdtvstands.us.com/lcd-tv-stand-wide.asp?ID=11233)

• Rent a Generator

• Still Camera

• Camera Recorder or webcam

• Tri-pod

• Power cords

• 6 Frame gold or silver bedazzled to go around TV

• 6 Prints of the different landscapes same size as tv screen ~25”

CWN group, proposal take 3

From the 19th century idealistic landscape paintings we have idolized the idea of having the perfect view of nature. This notion of the “view” is something that has not been erased by time, in fact, it has only been strengthened. We have not surpassed the day where people have stopped buying these pastoral landscape images to adorn their homes and this time will probably not come to pass in the near future. But while we still give great value to these images, they have started to be subside due to commodification of the real thing. Realtors and buyers alike focus on many aspects of selling and buying a home, respectively. From the amount of bedrooms to the size of the kitchen to the amount of natural light, another aspect highly sought after is an amazing view. And people will pay top notch prices for an incredible view, the best view.

For our term project, our group is interested in following this notion of the “view.” We are curious to find out the different price ranges of condominiums at the John Ross in respect to their views. In the same sentiment, we are also deeply intrigued by how people associate this view from their home with how they connect to their environment. We want to question why our culture puts so much emphasis on having a “view,” and what that means for the people at the John Ross.

To accomplish this project, our plan is to set up a camera in 5 different condominiums at the John Ross, each ranging in price range, floor plan and view. We would like to set up a camera that could take video from each of these apartments for 24 hours. The thought behind this is that you could experience an entire day of the view from each of the condos. Which, in fact, might be more than someone would actually experience of their own view from their condo. In the gallery space, we would like to include photos from each apartment, floor plans and the entire video. We would also like to create golden frames to put around the TV displays in the gallery, as a way of referencing the 19th century landscape paintings.
